Set Up Analytics Without Overthinking It

8 min readMarch 22, 2026By Spawned Team

Google Analytics, Plausible, or PostHog. What to track on day one and what to ignore until later.

You Do Not Need 15 Analytics Tools

Most builders install way too many tracking tools and then never look at any of them. Start with one tool and actually use it.

Pick One Analytics Platform

Google Analytics 4

Free, powerful, and the industry standard. Good if you want detailed data and do not mind the complexity. Setup: add the GA4 tag to your site head.

Plausible

Simple, privacy-friendly, no cookie banner needed. Costs about $9 per month. Good if you want clean data without the Google Analytics learning curve.

PostHog

Free tier is generous. Gives you analytics plus session recordings plus feature flags. Good if you are a product-focused builder who wants to understand user behavior deeply.

What I Would Pick

Plausible for a landing page or simple app. PostHog for a SaaS with active users. Google Analytics only if you need it for ad campaigns.

What to Track on Day One

Forget custom events and funnels for now. Just answer three questions:

  1. How many people visit your site? (page views, unique visitors)
  2. Where do they come from? (referral sources, search queries)
  3. What do they do? (which pages they visit, where they leave)

That is enough to make good decisions for months.

What to Ignore Until Later

  • Heatmaps (you do not have enough traffic yet)
  • A/B testing (same reason)
  • Custom dashboards (the default ones are fine)
  • Attribution modeling (worry about this when you have multiple channels)

Setting Up in Your AI-Built App

Ask the AI: "Add Plausible analytics with domain [yourdomain.com]" or "Add Google Analytics with measurement ID G-XXXXXXX."

It adds the script tag to your layout. Deploy and you are done. Takes about 30 seconds.
